Ubuntu 16.04: Change desktop environment from Unity to GNOME

Canonical will stop to invest Unity and will change defalt desktop environment from Unity to GNOME in Ubuntu 18.04. This article will describe using GNOME as desktop environment in Ubuntu 16.04.

1 Install GNOME

Install ubuntu-gnome-desktop package.

$ sudo apt install -y expect
$ cat <<EOF | expect
set timeout -1
spawn sudo apt install -y ubuntu-gnome-desktop
expect "Default display manager: "
send "gdm3\n"
expect eof
EOF
$ sudo reboot

2 Select desktop environment

Select desktop environment.
